Last Wednesday, I started my Advanced Photography Seminar along with 6 other people at Sir Jo Avila’s studio. I was really just idle lately, haven’t been shooting much, yet I want to learn more about taking shots products, food, studio lighting etc. so I joined for the Advanced Class.
The night started with analyzing what kind of light setups were used in specific photographs and how the shots came out to be. Then, we came to the topic of lightpainting with the use of a lone flashlight.

Each of us were tasked to do our own layout of sorts on a small tabletop and move around the table to light the objects of interest. There was something notable about the process- music was playing while Sir Jo and all of us were doing it. He said it was about the beat of the music, it’s really hard to estimate the time of exposing light on the objects with a locked cable release on the other end.

Once we were done with arranging the objects on the table, we locked the focus on them within the frame then set our lenses to Manual Focus (MF). Aperture at f/16…Bulb mode (B)…ISO 100. Lights off, Music On!
(Kahit sexy music etc.) My attempts were really a mess…if you guys and gals think that Light Painting is easy, think again! It takes a lot of practice. One important thing I can note is the reminder of Sir Jo when I got home and posted the funny picture from the lightpainting that I did in the studio:

I took us almost the whole night to finish our lightpainting exercise. I had a good time smiling and laughing as the boys in the studio were joking around with Sir Jo when the lights were off. :p And oh, here’s the one I saved to remember the lightpainting session:

Back at home, I got bored and then I decided to apply what I learned. I’m still practicing but here are the shots from our wooden table at home:
