A Lone Trip to Olango Island

September 7, 2009. I was already alone in Cebu City that day with the last of my blogger friends leaving for Manila at 4am in the morning. I was able to travel alone alraedy by taking a plane trip alone, but never have I went on a tour alone in one place for days. A lone trip around the city was planned and listed on paper but I had this unexpected trip to sail across the Island of Olango across Mactan. I never really knew that island in my itinerary to take pictures of major landmarks of Cebu. It was only when I was eating at Sutukil just beside the Mactan Shrine that the locals suggested I sail via a 16-peso boat ride. 15 pesos for the ride and a peso for the terminal fee.

This one is before I left mactan

Olango Island isn’t really touched by modern civilization. It is a bird sanctuary.

I came there for bird watching and shooting some infrared and asides. It was interesting enough to know that it’s only an island away from Bohol already.

It’s amazing how parts of the island transform when it’s low tide.

the island is an endless bed of mangroves

There were also many mangroves, species of hermit crabs, birds, small fishes that look like mega tadpoles at the island.

There was also this gazebo with leading steps that only appear when it’s low tide.

Same goes with the house on stilts just by the shore. I can’t seem to get enough of this island in one day even with bad weather.

Being alone in the other part of the island for half a day is very liberating. There was even a point of no return if the tides went high again with the strong winds of the crazy weather. Nevertheless, the island gave me a peaceful feeling and appreciation of the beauty of the world that’s yet to be seen if I only step out and travel-which I’ve never done for the past 21 years of my life. Hmm..or just learn more about how to go about with Infrared Photography (I still suck :-P ).

The most beautiful sunset in Cebu can be seen on this place. I’ll come back probably November to shoot scapes here and birds. ;)
