Typhoon Ondoy

Ondoy at our Village Gate by Maki Eduardo

Typhoon Ondoy at our village gate

(Our village guard already took off his uniform, half of the gate submerged in flood, while the people along the avenue outside are trying to cross the other side of the road with nylon ropes from the local baranggay…This was the closest shot I can get from our part of the village without getting myself wet.)

I’m thankful enought to say that our area didn’t get that much affected by Typhoon Ondoy. See this video on the nearest intersection from our home in Quezon City:

The country was expecting a storm during the weekend, but I think everyone didn’t expect such heavy downpour that was similarly-witnessed 42 years ago. It was already devastating to see how the storm has enveloped the archipelago on this following picture:

Sigh. I’ve experienced much frustration also during my college years, when classes get suspended on predictions of bad weather which actually turn out to be sunny days. Such instances didn’t just happen a few times as I have experienced it…it happens most of the time and the country didn’t need another of it during the weekend. Everyone came unprepared. I’ll just pray for those who were affected in this storm.

Much to my surprise however, the first picture in this post was requested by an online journalist in Canada to be part of their news website coverage of the typhoon. I was thankful enough for their interest in my photo to be put up on their website, but there are stil lots of pictures out there that are far greater in depth and detail of stories of their experience with Ondoy.

I really want to help the victims of Ondoy and I’ll find a way how to. There are really lots of people who are still out there waiting to be rescued.  Hopefully everyone will recover from all this.

P.S
I hope people can be mature enough and stop posting ridiculous status updates about the situation here in the Philippines with typhoon Ondoy or how people in this country deserve to drown in misery. Also, stop being too complacent…It’s about t…ime that most of us should care for other people too and help out there. There are still 2 typhoons on the way. Take note of that.
