Balisong Factory in Batangas

As I have said during my previous post about the underpaid laborers in Batangas, I’m blogging about the Balisong Makers too. Having went to a Balisong Factory was one of my most interesting memories from Batangas.

I learned so many things about the Balisong other than being just another sharp 29 centimeter-long object or weapon owned by thugs or what. One thing I learned about it was that the handles cold be encrusted with the bone of a horse or horn of a deer to make it a premium item. I was able to see how a horse’s bone was cut and drilled to size the Balisong handles.

There are also different kinds of Balisong like the Rambo Balisong, which got its looks from the knife that was used in the first ever Rambo movie entitled First Blood that had a saw back design.

For a while I remembered my late Lolo Marcial who used to own a Rambo Knife…He was a war veteran and really loved watching Rambo.

And yes, there’s always that adorable Baby Balisong…see the comparative scale of the Baby Balisong to its parent the Bente Nuebe?

I couldn’t find use for the Baby Balisong other than cleaning my nails! It’s that small! :P

Another thing I learned from the visit was that Balisongs aren’t purely made with raw metal, but with also used and rusty car parts like bearings. The Balisong makers forge Balisong blades from such, and quality wise, finished products don’t look any different.

These ones really looked all rusty. I never imagined the tips would look great once finished.

After those brief new learnings about the Balisong, we were able to meet one of the makers and he eve did a demo on handling the Balisong. Here’s the video:

Just got back from the PI and I picked up two Batangas balisong at a handicrafts store in Malate. I’ve wanted a handmade Batangas balisong since I was 14 or 15 (I’m 29 now), so I am so happy with them. Hopefully I will be able to make it to Batangas later this year! :)
